The meaning of skin cancer

Basal cell carcinoma, melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the types of skin cancer that appear the most. The way in which it is manifested variates greatly. Basal cell carcinoma usually have a pearly translucency to a flesh like color. Tiny blood vessels also show on the surface of the skin and sometimes even ulceration. Squamous cell carcinoma is an uncontrolled growth that is presented as an open sore, that is red and crusted or a bump. This type of skin cancer grows rapidly. Melanoma is an asymmetrical pigmented area on the skin, that often shows different colors and is bigger than 5 mm diameter. The cause of these skin cancers is namely UV- light (sun). The risks of the development of these types of skin cancer are: vacations with a lot of sunlight, outside work or sports and using tanning beds. It could also be that melanoma runs in the family, so it can also be inherited. The dermatologist will ask if you have family members who have had an experience with melanoma when doing a skin cancer check.

Skin cancer treatment

How you should be treated depends on the type of skin cancer you have. Check this link for more information in Dutch. A topical cream is sometimes used to treat basal cell carcinomas, but most of the time the skin cancer must be removed. The pathologist can see under a microscope whether the lesion has been completely removed. At the Roosevelt clinic we have highly trained and experienced dermato-surgeons. After removal of a melanoma the dermatologist will perform an extra excision around the scar. That is to make sure everything is removed, according to the treatment guidelines in the Netherlands. In some exceptional cases the patient needs to be referred to an academic center for a more secure skin cancer check.
